{"id":177,"date":"2021-05-12T09:53:40","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T09:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ds-wordpress.haverford.edu\/lacol-dh\/?page_id=177"},"modified":"2021-07-11T16:03:43","modified_gmt":"2021-07-11T16:03:43","slug":"week-4-text-analysis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/ds-wordpress.haverford.edu\/lacol-dh\/labs\/week-4-text-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 4 &#8211; Text Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Immerse Yourself in Voyant!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Building upon your initial foray into <a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voyant tools<\/a> with your blog post from earlier this week, we would like you to conduct a &#8220;comparative textual analysis.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will work either with (a) just the selected object from your home institution or (b) the selected object from your home institution <em>and<\/em> <strong>one other object of your choice<\/strong> (from your home institution or another LACOL institution).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>GOALS:<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Engagement with your selected object (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/ds-wordpress.haverford.edu\/lacol-dh\/labs\/week-2-omeka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">week #2 lab<\/a>) from your campus\u2019s digital collections (<em>*** If you have not already, please choose your object now ***<\/em>).<\/li><li>Visualization of your selected object(s) and how it relates to social justice.<\/li><li>Develop a deeper proficiency of the <a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voyant tools<\/a>.<\/li><li>Conduct a &#8220;Comparative Textual Analysis.&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>&#8220;Comparative Textual Analysis&#8221; SPECS:<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Write up a Report that addresses the questions in the \u201c<strong>Visualize, Compare, and Consider\u201d <\/strong>section below.<\/li><li>Include <strong>2-3<\/strong> of the most meaningful Voyant visualizations.<\/li><li>Word count: <strong>400-500 words<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Make certain to have a clear introduction and conclusion.<\/li><li>Provide a fun and creative title to your lab report.<\/li><li>Double-spaced.<\/li><li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/owl.purdue.edu\/owl\/research_and_citation\/mla_style\/mla_formatting_and_style_guide\/mla_formatting_and_style_guide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MLA<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/owl.purdue.edu\/owl\/research_and_citation\/chicago_manual_17th_edition\/cmos_formatting_and_style_guide\/chicago_manual_of_style_17th_edition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chicago<\/a> format.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LAB INSTRUCTIONS:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Select<\/span>:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you have not already, please select your object from your home campus digital collection. (<em>Please see <\/em><strong><em><u><a href=\"http:\/\/ds-wordpress.haverford.edu\/lacol-dh\/labs\/week-2-omeka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">week #2 lab<\/a><\/u><\/em><\/strong>).<\/li><li>Peruse and select two different sections from your object.<\/li><li>The distinct portions should be related by time (i.e. day, week, month, year, etc.).<\/li><li><em>Don\u2019t do an entire decade or longer period of time\u2014start with a small bit of data.<\/em><\/li><li>You will be creating two different files&#8211; one for each section (or object).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em><u><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><strong>Nota Bene<\/strong><\/span><\/u>: Alternatively, you can compare your selected object with <u>a similar but distinct second object <\/u>from the same digital collection or from another digital collection. In other words, you can compare two different objects for<em> this &#8220;Comparative Textual Analysis&#8221; lab<\/em>.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-9ff1880b-eeb8-42e5-9728-96fb428ee4c0\"><li>Now that you&#8217;re familiar with <a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voyant tools<\/a>, what makes the most sense for each file? How many days\/months\/years should go in each file? In other words, what is the &#8220;granularity?&#8221; How do you need to structure the corpus to balance the granularity of each file?<\/li><li>Consider: If one text file contains an entire year and another file contains just one month, how will that affect your graph? Your word cloud?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Assemble &amp; Create Your Corpus:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&#8220;Corpus&#8221; is another word for a set of documents. For more detailed info see: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/docs\/#!\/guide\/corpuscreator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creating a Corpus<\/a>&#8221; on the Voyant Tools Help page.<\/li><li>Open an existing corpus (click on the &#8220;Open&#8221; button under the text box).<\/li><li>Type or paste text into the main text box (this creates a corpus with one document).<\/li><li>Type or paste one or more URLs into the main text box (one URL per line).<\/li><li>Click the &#8220;Upload&#8221; button under the text box to use files from your computer.<\/li><li>Make sure your two files are named differently so that they will be easy to distinguish from one another.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Upload Your Corpus to <a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voyant<\/a><\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To add more text files\/multiple files to Voyant: find the <strong>Documents tab<\/strong> in the lower left corner, press the <strong>Modify<\/strong> button, then <strong>Add<\/strong>, and then <strong>Upload. <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><li>Upload your two files.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Visualize, Compare, and Consider:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Try out the various visualizations in Voyant. Which work best (or not) for a comparison between these two corpora?<\/li><li>How is Voyant a useful (or not) digital tool to analyze your selected object? <\/li><li>What did the comparative aspect (i.e. using two files\/corpora) offer you? Did you learn more or less about your topic? <\/li><li>How might you use comparative text analysis methods in your own project?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Submission Details<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Submit the lab report as a PDF to Canvas by the end of the day (local time) on Saturday, July 10th.<\/li><li>You can write the report in Google Docs, Word, Pages, or another application.
