What did you see? What surprised you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(<em>Exercise adapted from Mackenzie Brooks<\/em> ~<em>Thank you!<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objective: <\/strong>In anticipation of using <em>voyant<\/em> to conduct a text analysis on an object from one of the campus digital collections, let\u2019s first practice with <a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/\">voyant tools<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Project Gutenberg: <\/strong>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/browse\/scores\/top\">Project Gutenberg<\/a> and select a literary book you have read previously \u2013 whether in a high school or college course or on your own. Ideally, it should be a story that you know well and have immensely enjoyed. (Some personal favorites of mine available on the Project Gutenberg site include: &nbsp;Mary Shelley\u2019s <em>Frankenstein<\/em>, L. Frank Baum\u2019s <em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em>, <em>Grimms\u2019 Fairy Tales<\/em>, Cervantes\u2019 <em>Don Quixote<\/em>, Arthur Conan Doyle\u2019s <em>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes<\/em>, and Homer\u2019s <em>The Odyssey<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Download the plain text version of the book\/story you have selected.<\/li><li>Upload the downloaded text file into <a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/\">voyant tools<\/a>.<\/li><li>Use the little window icon to change the tool being displayed in each window.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As you look through the various displays of your selected book, consider the following questions or prompts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/voyant-tools.org\/\">Voyant<\/a> offers many ways to visualize your select text\u2014which method worked best for you?<\/li><li>What are the most common and the least common words? \u00a0Was this surprising?<\/li><li>Search for a meaningful word in the \u201cTrends\u201d tool. How is this word used\u00a0throughout your selected book?<\/li><li>Were you able to identify the topics for your book?
