Guarded Against the Glitter of False Learning

Address of the Managers

Address of the Managers, 1833

The Board of Managers Address from the founding of Haverford provides insight into the landscape of a new kind of education for young Quaker men. In this address, like the Ascham editorial in The Friend, the Board of Managers recognized the need for both “a guarded and liberal education.” Education is defined as a holistic endeavor that empowers its students to ward against the temptations of “be [ing] dazzled by the glitter of false learning.” From its onset, though its curriculum was bold for a Quaker institution, Haverford set out to create a community of learners who judged the validity and usefulness of knowledge for themselves.
