Read this short excerpt from Horst Zuse’s The Life and Work of Konrad Zuse, “The Z4 Computer and the Zuse Apparatebau in Berlin (1940-1945),” to learn about Zuse’s plans to construct the Z4 and why it was impossible for him to then complete the machine. The next section of the book, “The Zuse KG,” explains how Zuse was able to finish constructing the Z4 once the war was over and describes the mechanical memory function of the machine.

Visit the site for the Deutsches Museum, where the Z4 currently resides. Since the site is written in German, you may need to translate the page’s material.
